Longtime community activist, entrepreneur
and publisher George Gonzales was found dead of an apparent
heart attack at his Sunday, December 19.
His loss will be felt throughout the
LGBT community as he touched so many organizations, causes
and individuals during his life. Former three-time gay
pride president and present member of both the Billy
DeFrank Center and ProLatino Boards of Directors, George
recently focused his attention on creating and establishing
San Jose's only gay-owned and -operated restaurant and
bar.
This business, the Brothel Restaurant
and Splash Bar & Grill, will continue operations
with its investors coming together to fill the breach
left by Gonzales.
For years, George Gonzales has rallied
the gay community to rise to its best potential and has
created businesses or services to fill voids left in
our LGBT family. He was a rare individual who showed
the courage of his convictions as he went forth—not
just with talk—but with action, to solve community
problems and meet community needs. His latest venture
was an apt reflection of the human being George Gonzales
was.
